My Students

My students are eager to read and learn about the Roaring Twenties, World War II, and the Harlem Renaissance however, let's be honest, textbooks can be boring! My students would love to dive deep into these important periods of American history through novels and literature circles.

My charter school is located on the west-side of Chicago.

We are a year-round, extended day school and our daily schedule is from 8:30-5:15pm. My 28 students set extremely high expectations for themselves and their education. As a teacher, I'm trying to ensure that they have all the possible resources available to help them grow as students and life-long learners.

My Project

I'm requesting 30 copies of the novel "Hiroshima" to help my students have a better understanding of the United States' role in WWII. I'm requesting 30 copies of the novel "The Great Gatsby" so that my students can better grasp what life was like during the Roaring Twenties. I'm requesting various books about the Harlem Renaissance for individual student study.

My project is a crucial piece to my social studies curriculum because many of my students do not grasp the importance of American history.

When students are educated on our history, they are able to take that information and apply it to their own life and reflect upon the changes they want to see in the present and future.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
