This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Quetzal classroom is composed of 3rd graders who are learning all core subjects in Spanish (Math, Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts) for the majority of the day, about 4 hours daily.

My students are an eager group that is excited to acquire as much knowledge as they can!

Whether that is in math, science, or Spanish class, it rarely matters as they are all eager to show what they are learning and understanding from their lessons. They always give me their all and work to achieve the high expectations I have for them. Therefore, I need to always be stepping up to the plate to continuously challenge them.

I want to make sure I am providing the best education and experience for my students. This means giving them rigorous material that challenges them as well as giving them spaces that allow them to work at their comfort and being able to collaborate with their peers.

My Project

People are not born knowing what empathy or responsibility are. Children don't understand what these terms are or mean, even if they exemplify these traits. Therefore, I want to create the opportunities for them to understand and exhibit these traits.

These tools will help my students begin to understand what these traits are and how to better demonstrate them in the classroom.

Students will get the opportunity to use hands-on and reward based systems to practice empathy amongst their peers and responsibility with their materials.

I hope to create a system where students can use bracelets to let their fellow classmates know how their feeling. This can then allow their peers to ask them how they feel. As an immersion school, this also provides them the opportunity to get real-world practice in Spanish by creating natural conversations among themselves. As well as having a bucket where they can encourage and help their classmates feel good about themselves.

I hope to use caddies and toothbrush holders as a way to have them be responsible for their pencils in the classroom. As any teacher knows, pencils can be the bane of the classroom existence by constantly being lost or misplaced. This will hopefully eliminate some of that grief and allows students to practice being responsible for their materials.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
