Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There is great diversity among the students who come to my classroom, and many come from low socio-economic backgrounds.

The students that I support are in the fourth and fifth grades and are very motivated to be successful readers and writers.

My students have a variety of special needs including Dyslexia, which impacts their ability to decode words. As the students get older, the urgency to support their reading and writing development is even more crucial.

My Project

Older students who struggle to read face particular challenges and require access to decodable texts that follow a rules-based reading approach while providing engaging content. The pandemic has provided some unique challenges for my students and I am looking for ways to engage my students while providing high-quality instruction.

Students can make significant reading gains through the use of systematic rules based reading instruction with carefully chosen decodable texts to reinforce and apply new skills.

The materials I chose include decodable texts, an assessment manual, and a Teachers Pay Teachers gift card. The Recipe for Reading decodable series aligns with the instructional manual that provides a scope and sequence of phonics skills my students are learning in a rules based reading approach. The TPT gift card will provide access to supplemental materials such as decodable poetry and passages (both fiction and non fiction) to provide much needed additional practice to reinforce skills being introduced. In addition, there are decodable chapter books for some of my older students who still need phonics practice but want to read higher-level texts like their peers.
