My students need the opportunity to choose the right seating choice: a comfortable cushion, a regular chair, standing, or a stationary bike. These materials will make a great difference in their productivity!

My Students
I teach 6th-8th graders in a public middle school where I am a Math Interventionist. I provide a second math class to the students who have been identified as below proficiency. Portland, Maine has a population of approximately 67,000 people and about 21% of these residents live in poverty. Portland has been designated a United States Refuge Resettlement Community. My school district, Portland Public Schools, serves approximately 7,000 students and about 59 languages have been registered at our Multilingual Office as language that are spoken at home. My school has approximately 495 students and these students come from 4 other elementary schools. At my school 54% of students receive free/reduced lunch. My students have their regular math and my math class for extra support. Students in my classroom work independently, in small groups and large groups. Students move around in my class, but I'd like to give an opportunity to exercise and learn! I also want to give them the opportunity to sit on the floor in a comfortable way. Students need a choice as to what works best for them and I want to have the materials to give them the right choice!
My Project
My students need different seating choices. Some students like to stand, some like to sit and others like to move while they work. If they want to sit on the floor, they will need a comfortable cushion. If they want to move while they work, they will need a stationary bike. The students I work with are very focused on their academics so they can reach proficiency and be prepared for high school and beyond. I want them stimulated in appropriate ways. Other schools across the country have tried these exercise resources in their classrooms and have seen great success. Having a stationary bike will help my students to get energy out and learn! I want my students to have multiple opportunities available to them. Their success is paramount!
