Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In my classroom, my students learn by doing. We are active and engaged learners. Reading is best learned by reading. We read books together as a class and students engage in reader's workshop to strengthen their own reading. We practice our skills with real texts. Sometimes we need extra help.

My students are active and energetic 4th graders.

They love to read and to be involved in learning new things. They have very diverse backgrounds and bring different strengths and areas of need to our classroom. My students are passionate. They want to make a difference in their world and are always looking for ways to improve themselves and help each other be more successful. Our school is very diverse, but we all work together to achieve student success. Our goal as a campus community is to see each child, each student, grow and develop to become the best they can be.

My Project

All children love to play games and most of the time the best review of a skill is not a worksheet but a game. All of these games review skills that we study through authentic reading of self-selected and teacher selected texts. Applying all of these skills in our actual reading is our true goal, but sometimes we need to practice the skill in isolation to truly understand it. I see my students working together and playing together to achieve mastery of these fundamental reading skills. I also can use these as review games with my students who are still struggling with understanding these skills. I will use them during class as well as for tutoring before and after school. Additionally, these are resources that will help not just this year's class but will help future classes as well.

Reading is a life long journey and a love of reading will take students on journeys they could never imagine.

Reading is about so much more than being able to read the words on the page. It is about being able to think about the words on the page and to do that we have teach critical reading skills. Games are just one way to reinforce those skills and will help my students become masters of the written word.
