The Rat Lab Needs Chemical Energy to Explore Electricity

My Students

We are "THE RAT LAB" an innovative, hands-on, interactive, departmentalized, fourth-grade classroom, and fifth grade, exposing a total of 180 students, ninety minutes daily, to either Social Studies (Civics & History) or to various areas of the Sciences or Health topics.

"The Rat Lab" is part of the largest elementary in our rural county, nestled at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains.

Our school educates and impacts the lives of over five hundred (500) students, on a daily basis, 180 days a year. Approximately, 80% or higher, of our students are classified in the low socio-economic class.

Currently, we are facing the effects of the Covid and Drug Epidemic leaving in their wake the innocent victims, our students. The decline in the coal industry has created a ripple effect on the future occupations in our great mountain home.

We strive to provide our students with a brighter educational future, despite the obstacles in their daily lives. Many of our parents are dedicated, loving, and strive to provide their children with opportunities, to make their futures more promising. It is our responsibility as educators and as human beings to meet the emotional/physical/educational needs of all.

My Project

The Rat Lab Electricity Science lesson begins when the needed materials are laid out on the table and the instructions are given to create light. No directions given, just self driven exploration till success is gained.

The sights and sounds when a student first successfully connects the chemical energy and creates electrical energy in the form of light or motion, and yells these words I DID IT I CREATED LIGHT is an event, as a teacher, that never gets old.

This is what I get to experience in my Rat Lab. three times a day, while working in the Energy Unit - Electricity, but the lack of chemical energy, in the form of batteries and bulbs, is making our electrical glow dim to non-existent. The Rat Lab needs charged up....

These materials will reach 180 students in the 4th & 5th grade classrooms, on a daily basis, creating an experience that will last for a lifetime. Finally, the mystery of how their everyday lives is illuminated will be revealed and is now within their power to control with a flip of a switch.

Allow us to KEEP THE LIGHTS BURNING in our classrooms and in the minds of our students.
