Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

School can be tough for some students, but it should still be a place they feel safe and welcomed. There are times when students need a time and a space in which they can let go of their worries or insecurities without fear of being made fun of or feel singled out in order to reflect. The Rainbow Room will help students learn to see the world through the eyes of another person by having a designated space to meet and support others with similar issues. We will come together as a class to read stories that highlight issues that we are facing in our school.

My students will learn to work toward alleviating suffering in others by using this space and time to brainstorm ideas on how we can help those in need in our school.

We will take the time to get to know one another and share how we can assist one another. We will use handwritten notes, or printed notes to spread joy to someone in need. The success of our gathering space can be measured by my students’ understanding of compassion from their conversations. My students will eventually be able to recognize signs that show when others need their assistance. My students will come up with ways to help others without my input. This area will have a chair in which students will sit and read aloud to others as well as time to sit and reflect, an inviting rug that they can sit on as well as cushions to make it more comfortable. The lamp and table will help enhance the area and serve as a holding space for books. Through this project, my students will learn to show compassion for others in a way that will make them feel safe and welcomed.
