My job as a teacher is to give students power. By increasing my students vocabulary, I can do just that. I teach second grade in a public school that services students from a high-poverty background.
My students participate in a writing program called Writer's Workshop. The program is designed to allow students take ownership and pride in their writing. Often I have observed otherwise expressive students shy away from writing detailed pieces because they cannot find "the right words" to tell their story. Potentially entertaining stories are often cut short due to the students' inability to express themselves as they would wish. Unfortunately, our school has a lack of available funding for resources that would otherwise solve this problem.
How many times have you had a word on the tip of your tongue that you just couldn't get out? How excited were you when the word finally came to mind? You can imagine how my students must feel. My students need something to "charge them up" and I believe a thesaurus can do just that. A valuable resource for the expansion of vocabulary, the thesaurus allows students to maintain ownership of their writing and understanding.
With your help, together we can make sure the students rise to their powerful potential.
