One of the biggest challenges in the class room today is balancing the use of technology (specifically cell phones) in the class room. On the one hand, they can be wonderful tools that help students access information quickly and easily. On the other hand they can be a distraction to individual students and their neighbors. The goal of this project is to give my students a resource to help them expand their vocabulary without putting a phone in their hands.
My personal philosophy is "put a book in their hands".
By having a classroom set of dictionaries I will able to put this philosophy into practice. If we don't know a word, our first action is to pull out our phone and look it up. This is a great strategy when we are on the go or in a hurry, but when we rely on this strategy in the classroom our students miss out on the valuable learning opportunity (that is searching thorough a dictionary) and often end up getting distracted / off task.
This classroom set of dictionaries will open the door for many vocabulary building activities that are currently not possible without them, as well as help keep the students focused on their learning task and not what going on on their phone.
Break times and free time in class have also been dominated by technology. During out 90 periods I like to give students short breaks. But instead of interacting with each other or moving around, most of my students simply pull out their phones and tune out.
The games I am requesting are a way to build community in my classroom, by giving my students fun (word focused) alternatives to their technology.
