Ms. McCartney from Olathe KS is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

The Power of Reading: Gain Perspective and Empathy Through Literature

Help me give my students the chance to read books that are representative of different lived experiences. "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime" gives students insight into a protagonist with a mental disability.

My Students

My 9th-grade students are full of empathy and curiosity. They have grown up in an ever-changing world full of activism, powerful voices, history-making moments, media, and more.

My students thrive in creative and autonomous environments where they can showcase their true talents and potential.

These students are masters of technology, they are difference-makers, and they a fiercely loyal to the ones they love.

My Project

Today's students need to read books that are representative of all experiences and backgrounds, while also being modern and up-to-date with current events. While the traditional texts like "Of Mice and Men" & "To Kill a Mockingbird" are rich in language and symbolism, the kids struggle to relate to these novels.

The goal of this project is to collect literature that can balance out the traditional texts and diversify our classroom novels.

"The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime" will join books "Dear Martin", "We Are Not From Here", and "Internment" to create a diverse literature circle selection.
