This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students enter the classroom each day excited and ready to learn. They love to practice math, read, and write daily. I strive to keep their learning experiences authentic and hands on. I have found that the best way to keep my students engaged is to provide them with manipulatives and fun learning tools while they are learning.
I teach first grade at a Title I school in Maryland, and my students come from extremely diverse backgrounds.
Some students receive free and reduced meals, some are English Language Learners, and others have two working parents and spend most of their time with a babysitter or grandparent... But there is one thing they all have in common. The right to an exciting education and the ability to love learning.
My Project
In first grade, we teach many skills by selecting a high-quality mentor text. We carefully choose picture books with courageous characters, characters who face and overcome challenges, and characters who learn important lessons about life. Many of these books feature children as characters so that our first graders can make self-to-self connections.
The books I have chosen for this project will directly teach social skills, friendship lessons, and math skills through relatable characters and real-life situations.
Your donations will directly impact my classroom by providing us with a variety of books to be used as read-alouds and for my students to re-read during read-to-self time.
Although many of these titles are available at the school library or public library, it would be much easier to have quick access to them in my own classroom, as they are popular titles and are frequently checked out of the library. By having them in my classroom, I can also share them with the other first grade teachers and can re-visit the important lessons with my students throughout the school year.
These books will help my students to become better friends, more responsible, and learn about inclusion and the power of kind words. These social skills are a critical part of first grade and read alouds are the perfect way to model these situations in the classroom.
