The Power of a Memoir

My Project

Persepolis is a graphic novel written by Marjane Satrapi. This novel follows Satrapi's childhood experiences in Tehran, Iran during the overthrow of the Shah's regime and the beginning of the Islamic Revolution. This memoir has been by far my students favorite class reading in the World Literature class that I teach.

However, we currently are in need of a class-set, so that students have the opportunity to engage with the text without the distractions that technology often brings.

Graphic novels especially are difficult for students to fully understand when they are trying to read them on a small computer screen. I would like to use this memoir to help students explore perspective and personal connections to a text. I know that to meet these goals, students will have to have physical copies of books in their hands.

This memoir contains important world history, and it shows students a unique way to tell a story. I cannot wait to use these copies to lead large and small group discussions about a truly powerful text.
