My Students
My students come from a variety of backgrounds: low income, middle class, upper middle class, single parent, two parents, involved parents, no parents, etc. Regardless of where they come from, I want to provide my students with whatever they need to be successful each day. Books, technology, games...anything we can get our hands on!
Our sixth graders deserve everything they need to be successful!
Engagement is the key to a successful classroom. I am happy to do anything that I can do to bring in supplies, books, and technology to make our lessons more engaging.
My Project
“Never let anyone lower your goals. Others’ expectations of you are determined by their limitations of life. The sky is your limit, sons. Always shoot for the sun and you will shine.” ― Kwame Alexander, The Crossover.
The Crossover Rules are rules that students can relate to.
Mr. Alexander compares life to basketball throughout the book. Josh is the main character of the book. He and his brother are excellent basketball players with high goals for themselves. My students are currently listening to the book on audible.com. However, they’d benefit greatly from having the text in front of them as they read.
Kwame Alexander makes poems hip again...does anyone say hip anymore?! Poetry is not an easy read for most sixth graders. The Crossover is written in verse from the point of view of Josh, who is 13. My students can relate to him and his twin brother as they make their way through life. Sixth graders’ reading standards include being able to read and comprehend poetry. Having current books, like The Crossover will help them to be able to do just that.
