The Plant Project: Investigating Growth, Genetics, and Gametes

Help me give my students an opportunity to grow plants in the class, see their full results in 40 days, and collect Mendelian Genetics Data from their plants, all while learning about reproductive plant cycles!

This project expired on May 14, 2022.

My Students

My students are dedicated and curious students who love to learn how to investigate the world around them! Struggling to work with Covid-19, but still wanting the lab experience of a high school science classroom, these students are great!

Using modern technology to help students who merge from in-person and online on a day-to-day basis, these upgrades to my classroom help the students transition flawlessly from one circumstance to the next.

My Project

Do you remember those lessons in class about Mendel who discovered that the pea plants had different characteristics and it led to our modern understanding of genetics and inheritance of traits from our parents? For many of our students this is a fun concept to learn about, but the only application we have of understanding genetics to the students (and their direct connections) are that of their parents and it stops there.

With this project, students will be able to expand their knowledge of genetics into the realm of plants which will help them understand genetics as a whole even better - they are growing the genes themselves!

Students will be able to start with a specific set of traits that are clearly visible with the plants they grow (which are able to grow from seed to seed and start again) in 40 days, track growth, and measure the change of genetics and traits from one generation to the next. Pea plants are fun to learn about, but these "Fast Plants" make it a reality to grow in the classroom. Plus, if I do my job as a teacher right, I can reuse these new seeds from year to year, making this a sustainable project with little ongoing funding!

It is my hope that this project will grow each year, not in cost of materials but in how I apply it to my standards. I can teach photosynthesis with these plants and students can adjust how photosynthesis works with these plants and measure its output with another lab I have setup. Students can adjust environmental conditions to allow the same plant to grow in different ways just by altering one set of variables. This project has the potential to allow me to teach 3 different units (genetics, photosynthesis, and environment)!
