Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are hard-working, caring young people with a desire to be outstanding musicians. They come from many different financial backgrounds. While some students' families can afford private lessons, new strings, and accessories, others give it their all every day with what can be given to them through school and outside resources. Hurricane Harvey affected our students and our community in a significant way, putting budget projections for the next few years far below this year. This year, our students missed at least 2 weeks of school, putting us far behind our goals while our contest calendar remained unchanged.
Despite vast inequities, my students support each other in every way possible through peer tutoring and strong student leadership, however, they need better resources to reach their full potential!

My Project
Many of my cello and bass students are playing on instruments whose strings haven’t been changed in 2 years. They have gone false, are breaking from wear, and are just not enjoyable to play on any longer. We will improve our tone, intonation, and articulation with these new strings, giving new life to the sound of our orchestras and making a more enjoyable experience for every member of the orchestras.
The tuners/metronomes will ensure that everyone is tuned well and allow us to practice individually with precise rhythm.
With these tools, we will enhance every student’s experience in the orchestra and allow us to reach our goal of inspiring students to become lifelong lovers of music and fine arts.
