This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
As it was in 1839; still today – “The pen is mightier than the sword. Notably, in the 21st century, the sword has been replaced by: ignorance, intolerance, and academic ineptness. I teach third grade students who reside in a low economic area. Despite their hardships, these students are gifted, talented and hungry for more knowledge.
Without a doubt, “Written Communication” can be powerful. Where would we be as a nation if there was no written Constitution, no written Bills of Rights or no written technological manuals for our vast technological inventions? Yet, writing is not a major focus in many school districts. Currently, our district’s focus is in reading and math. Adding “insult to injury”, the current trend of sound spelling and slang usage in writing is propelling students towards illiteracy.
For my students, having the materials needed to grasp the fundamentals of effective writing is essential. Thus, I am seeking your help in providing the tools that students need in order to be successful writers. Third grade is a critical time for student development in writing. For many 3rd graders it can be daunting; yet with the right tools and strategic instruction writing can be fun and exciting. Materials such as a writing activity set, a writing skills kit, a paragraph editing center, and a sentence pocket chart.
Please do consider helping my students “wield a mighty pen”. The rewards will be great for these students.
