Help me give my students an educational trip to Atlanta they'll NEVER forget!
We live in a rural community that struggles economically. We are considered a high poverty school, but receive very little federal funding. 60% of my students qualify for free or reduced price lunch and many face difficulties at home.
Despite their home lives not always being secure, my students are polite, curious, hard working, and are deserving of every educational opportunity that can be placed within their reach.
Many of them long to know what lies beyond our local area, and traveling is one way to transport them beyond our county line.
Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "Education must enable one to sift and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real from the unreal, and the facts from the fiction. The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically." He spoke the absolute truth.
Atlanta is a city FULL of AMAZING educational experiences of which many students can only dream.
While here, students will have to “sift and weigh evidence” and "discern the true from the false" as they explore the Martin Luther King, Museum and tour CNN Studio. Students will experience the thrill of NASCAR racing at Atlanta Motor Speedway and see sportsmanship in action as they watch the Atlanta Hawks take on the Memphis Grizzlies.
Students will see the role that thinking intensively has in protecting the environment around them while enjoying the Georgia Aquarium. The World of Coke will show students the power that critical thinking has in helping to take a small southern company to the most recognized brand in the world.
Teaching students to "think intensively and to think critically" is not confined to the four walls of a classroom. In fact, the real power of education is creating experiences for children that remain with them long after they have left our four walls. Donations to my project will gift my students with an incredible educational trip to one of the cities that make our nation great, and participate in an experience that can not be replicated.
