My students struggle with basic geography skills; this includes finding their own hometown on a map and understanding how it fits in to the bigger picture of the world's geography. The atlases I currently have in my classroom are 12 years old and need to be updated. Yes, I know that a map can be looked up on Google, but there is still something so important about learning how to read a map for yourself. In today's world, which is becoming more and more globally connected everyday, knowing how it all fits together is vital to being a productive global citizen. These atlases will not only help to improve geography, my students literacy will be improved as well. Being able to look at graphics and discern specific information will help increase my students' literacy skills too. By understanding their location in the world, I hope, to create globally active citizens who want to make the world in which they live, a better place.
