My Students

Books allow us to escape from our world to the uncharted worlds of the unknown. The Outsiders is a wonderful book that helps students deal with issues of bullying and gangs. This is so important to the way of life of many of my students.

My students attend a Title I school where their choices are limited.

There is nothing to do in the community, and many of the parents cannot afford to whisk their kids around on vacations. The demographics are pretty even with almost half of the students being African-American and the other half being Caucasian. We also have a large ELL (English Language Learners) population. Although the racial makeup of the school is pretty even, the economic makeup of the school is almost the same for all the kids who attend here--poor. Therefore, the only exposure to a wide range of experiences my kids may get is in the world of the books they read.

My Project

I am requesting a class set of one excellent piece of literature! This book will help my kids understand many different literary elements. This one book can be used to teach at least 25 objectives. The poignant story will resonate with my students because this is a life that many of them live on a daily basis.

My project is important because if you give a child a book, you are essentially giving them the world.

I am a teacher who usually is able to foot the bill for the projects in my classroom. However, with the furloughs and state budget cuts effecting my salary, I am unable to bear the burden of outside resources any longer. But why should my kids be the ones who suffer?

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
