This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a very low-income community in the heart of the Silicon Valley. Currently, over half of our students are considered homeless. They are almost all minorities. Many are learning English as a second language, and many have faced extreme adversity in their home lives. Many students work far below grade level and all are on free or reduced-price lunch. My students come to school where it's a safe place, and, despite everything, they try their best every day. While surrounding communities boast multi-million dollar homes and high powered tech companies, my kids have seen things no child should see, and this impacts their learning at school.

My Project

My students are reluctant about reading. They really only respond to books where they can relate to the characters. We recently read an excerpt from The Outsiders and they really were hooked on the characters and how many of them have problems similar to the ones they face. I think this book would really resonate with my students. The idea of social classes and gang violence is something we see in our town often. If we had a class set of The Outsiders I feel confident that my students would get a lot out of reading and discussing it together.
