Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are their own kind of awesome. We successfully overcame a state turnaround status to become a strong, urban, growing neighborhood school. Our school has a rich culture and history in the Northside.

My students are in some of their most critical years as they are faced with important decisions regarding college and career opportunities.

They are a diverse group of students, representing English language learners, those who receive Special Education services, and are taking on the challenge of an AP English or college English course. I push our students, many of whom might otherwise believe they "can't," by having high expectations and helping them believe that they can do anything with the right tools.

My Project

Each year, I get a pulse on the kinds of books students are looking for. There are always tried and true classics but their interests change depending on what's going on around them. This year, in addition to some of the regular requests, students want books about the outdoors, mental health, and feminism. I humbly request your help in continuing to build our classroom library.

My students get to choose what books they read throughout the year because I firmly believe that is how they will become lifelong readers.

You can imagine that means having a robust classroom library because sending high school students to our very limited physical library just isn't an option. When students have regular, daily access to books in a classroom library and a teacher who can guide them, they are much more likely to find books they want to read.
