This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember how boring it was memorizing math facts? I don't want my students to just memorize their math because I told them to, I want them to discover a love of numbers.
My students are between the ages of 6 and 7, and are from low income families.
Most of my students live in a house where more than one language is spoken, and their parents do not speak English fluently. They have wonderful, supportive parents, but because of our language barrier, it is often hard to have a strong connection between school and home. While my students do not come from the strongest educational backgrounds they have a hunger to learn and are always excited for the "next thing" in our classroom.
My Project
I am asking for math based literature books, math manipulatives and a few math activities to strengthen the math background of my students. With the switch to common core standards, we a required to read more and more nonfiction texts during the course of our literacy block. This does not leave much time for fiction. I would still like to have my children hear fiction, as I feel it is important for them to still have imaginations. Using math based literature books during my math block would allow for these fiction books. But it would also allow for us to use these stories to do more hands-on, project based math. The manipulatives that I am asking for would assist my students in making models to better understand the problems they are given.
And lastly, the math activities are to engage them even further and allow them to "play" while still improving their math skills.
We put so much emphasis on reading and reading nonfiction texts that we lose sight of the fact that our children are still children and they still learn best through play.
Putting a little fiction and play back into our daily math routine is a good way for me to educate my students but still allow their imaginations to work and grow. And more importantly allow them to still be children!
