Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a self-contained class of 6th graders at an elementary school. The students come from a tight-knit community and our school is much loved by students and parents alike. More than 75% of my students are English Language Learners and about 90% qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch.
These students have the biggest hearts and such a passion for learning.
They thrive with hands-on and experiential learning and overcome obstacles in their personal and academic lives every day. They are a group of strong and perseverant humans.
My Project
My students will get an opportunity to experience authentic exploration of the natural world, such as identifying local plant and animal relationships, ecology, and human impact on the environment.
They will be surrounded by nature, in a "classroom" made of soaring redwoods and pond banks, having the chance to fall in love with the beauty and freedom of a dirt hiking trail.
These experiences will inspire them to become conscientious stewards and guardians of Earth's natural resources.
They will connect with each other and themselves during their last year of elementary school, making an investment in the childlike wonder that will ground them and build a foundation of true character as they prepare for the challenges of middle school.
