This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a rural, low-income school with a high-population of English Language Learners. As this school is located in northern California, the CA Gold Rush is a very important part of our history. Though without the right resources, even the most interesting pieces of the past can seem insignificant.
Our school has many end-of-the-year activities that relate to the CA Gold Rush. The students are excited about them even before they reach fourth grade. Unfortunately, as excited as they may be about panning for "gold" or being part of a "wagon train," a lot of the students do not fully understand the time period or its implications on our current way of life.
I am asking for a collection of books, both fiction and non-fiction, that describe the frenzied search for gold, the variety of people that made their way to California, the entrepreneurs and women that flourished during the time, and the hardships that newcomers faced when finally reaching the gold fields. Through these books, my students will have a greater understanding of the CA Gold Rush.
Your donation will ensure that future students will be able to read about and enhance their knowledge of the CA Gold Rush. It was an exciting and multidimensional piece of our state's history and one that speaks volumes to young students when given the right resources. Our fourth graders thank you!
