My Students

We are an urban school with a high poverty, high minority population. This is my first year teaching at a high needs school. Many of my students cannot even imagine a future outside the sad world in which they live right now. They have seen too much tragedy and heartbreak in their short lives.

I want them to be able to visualize a world where they can be the Top Dog, the Number One, the Chief Executive!

I want their present circumstances not to define their futures. I want them to dream BIG and have the confidence that they can be anything they want to be, if only they will work hard to pursue their goals.

My Project

We are well on the way to having the prettiest room in the school. 99% of my students come from disadvantaged backgrounds, and many have already experienced trauma, loss, and death in their short lives.

I want to give my little Word Detectives a pretty, tranquil refuge inside our loud and hectic school.

I am well on my way to creating a beautiful and calming space in which my students can read or listen to stories being read to them. We just need these few loose ends to perfect our classroom.

Our lending library is growing, thanks to generous donors, and charitable donations, and all is left, if for them to have a truly lovely and tranquil spot where their imaginations can soar. My heart soars when my students return one borrowed book and ask if they can take out another.
