Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in my classroom includes Math, Language Arts, and English Language Development instruction. We begin the day with an hour and twenty minutes of math instruction, followed by an hour and twenty minutes for reading instruction. The next 45 minutes are used with grammar and writing.
The population at our school is extremely diverse.
There is a large population of English Language Learners as well as students from many different nationalities. The school is located within a district with a high percentage of students that are socioeconomically disadvantaged. Despite many of these challenges, the students are eager to learn. Our school boasts some of the highest test scores in the district. In recent years, our fifth grade team has been rotating students for more focused instruction, which has added to the excitement of learning for many of our students as we help to prepare them for middle school. In addition, as our team has implemented the Common Core State Standards the students have enjoyed reading and analyzing novels. This has led to greater excitement about reading and deeper understanding of the content.
My Project
The books that are being requested will be utilized by the fifth grade students to increase their ability to read and analyze text at a fifth grade level. In addition, this particular book will aid in the teaching of informational text in relation to the science standards. By taking a cross curricular approach, the students will have an additional support in learning to analyze informational text. Students are going to be using the book to analyze the structure and function of field guides and field journals. Students will use this analysis to create their own field journals or informational reports.
The donation of this book will strengthen the students reading skills to increase their ability to achieve college and career readiness.
Our current curriculum focuses on narrative text, whereas the new state standards have a greater focus on informational text. This additional practice with informational text will help the students to reach and exceed the state standards.
