Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading has to be a thrilling experience for second graders to maintain interest. Our class needs sets of easy chapter books that are written by some of the students' favorite authors.

I'm a first year second grade teacher in a brand new school building.

Many of my students come from low socioeconomic homes. The kids have mixed reading abilities and some speak English as their second language. Even though there are many differing backgrounds and learning levels, the students have great school attendance and are always ready and eager to learn. My classroom lacks basic necessities to motivate and challenge all of my students. I believe they deserve all the opportunities I can give them to have an exciting second grade education.

My Project

When kids read a lot, they become much better readers. Nobody can become a better reader without a lot of exposure and access to various reading genres at their own reading level. The second graders are ready to read easy chapter books. I need books that they will be excited to read each day during reading groups. These chapter books are from series of books that the class has enjoyed together. If they could read these same series during a guided reading group, their motivation would sky rocket.

Reading is everything!!!

If kids do not learn to read, and read well, they will indelibly lose out on opportunities as they progress through life. Sets of books that are on each of their reading levels and that interest them will help me explicitly instruct them in reading strategies and teach the beauty of reading a chapter book!
