My students need a small literacy center that includes high interest level books, a book display cart and an iPad with a protective case for academic and social activities.
"If you've met 1 person with autism, then you've met 1 person with autism." - Stephen Shore
I have found this to be true in my journey through exploring special needs. There are no two students alike in a special education classroom. Milestones (big and small) are being celebrated each day.
Many of my students have Autism Spectrum Disorder.
I work with my co-teacher daily to help each of my students on their individual education journey. Each student is very different and unique in their own way. My students have a wide range of abilities. Some of them are working on learning their letters and others are at grade level in most subjects. Some of my students must be encouraged to be verbal and others struggle with appropriate social behavior. Almost all of my students need a high level of adult supervision throughout the school day. They join their general education peers as much as possible when appropriate throughout the day. They are well loved by their classmates and this is a friendship that cannot be broken or described. Our high needs classroom is embraced by our school community.
My Project
My students will use these materials in many different ways. The books and display shelf will be used for reading activities and centers. However, the iPad will be used in a variety of educational ways. With each of my students having such a vast range of needs, I can download apps for each of their individual goals. This can help each student learn at their own level using this unique and interactive tool. By using the iPad, the students can also work independently. This is a major goal for my students. Sometimes, even if they are working on a task independently only for 30 seconds, that is something to celebrate! I think by using this exciting learning tool in the classroom, it will help my students with their independent time on task while also working towards their individualized learning goals.
I believe this project has the potential to really change my classroom.
These tools will help my students both academically and behaviorally. I have witnessed iPads being used as tools in special education classrooms with great success and I hope to integrate them into my own classroom. I think it would really improve the daily educational experience of my students!
