My students need sets of Guided Reading books with varied reading levels in order to meet their differentiated needs.

My Students

Imagine starting school in a new country where no one speaks your language. This is the struggle my students face on a daily basis. They come from around the world and faraway places such as China, Portugal, Vietnam, Syria, Albania and Puerto Rico. Regardless of where they came from, my students are so amazing and eager to learn everything. They start in my urban, high poverty school knowing very little or no English but through motivation and hard work, they become English speakers, readers and writers in a short period of time.

They come from varied home circumstances with hard working parents but due to language barriers many of their families are unable to help them after school.

This makes the the time they spend in school even more crucial to their language development.

My school receives Title 1 funding which means that breakfast and lunch is provided daily to all students. These may be their only meals of the day.

My Project

How can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed? I am the ESL teacher for 60 students but do not have enough reading materials to meet the needs of my students. They need multiple copies of different level books with varied topics in order to increase vocabulary and general knowledge while learning to read. I chose high interest books that will appeal to a variety of learners and reading levels.

"The more that you read, the more things you will know, the more that you learn, the more places you will go"~ Dr Seuss ~ This project will help my students go places through books and their imaginations.

My Kindergarten through 2nd grade students are like sponges, soaking up every bit of knowledge. I can't wait to see how their reading skills will thrive as a result of having these new books in the classroom. Your generous donation to our project will improve my ESL classroom by building stronger readers. This will change my students' and families' lives for the better. Help me help them become successful in school and in their new country.
