My students need concrete tools for noticing and accepting what's going on with their feelings, their bodies and their surroundings without judgment or labels.
In our diverse, urban, Seattle 2nd/3rd classroom, we are learning about ourselves as we delve into math, science and social studies within the context of our own community. About 1/3 of our students are learning English, 1/5 have learning disabilities, 1/5 are advanced learners, and 1/2 receive free and reduced lunch. These young children are developing their own identities and a sense of who they are in our school community.
When stress and anxiety are addressed and reduced, deep learning happens.
Research shows that experiential practices in intentional breathing, mindfulness and movement act as a protective factor for stressful experiences and create a relaxation response in the brain. We want students making purposeful and conscious decisions throughout their day. With tools students can cultivate resilience, compassion, attention, self-regulation, and well-being. Not only in the classroom, but in their lives.
My Project
This project builds a classroom community where mindfulness practice is foundational to creating an optimal learning environment. Mindfulness practice involves specific lessons in breathe and movement. The tools acquired in this project can be used in those lessons. Students will learn concretely how their brain and bodies work with the models of the brain and skeleton. The bell, yoga pillow, books and headphones invite and support students towards relaxation and presence. Creating many avenues to access mindfulness is important in the classroom. There we can connect to ourselves, each other and our humanity. The science of oneself is invaluable!
