The Microscopic World of Forensic Science

My students need 2 Microscopes. Stereo Microscopes are essential to examining trace evidence such as hair, fibers, soil, and glass in our Forensic Science class.

My Students

Partly due to the explosion of crime scene investigation television shows, students from diverse backgrounds are infatuated with Forensic Science. We can tap into this infatuation by providing more in-depth science education through trace evidence examination of a student-written crime scene.

My students are diverse in interests, future plans, culture, and economic background.

They enjoy hands-on learning in our science classes and often bring in items to investigate in our Forensic Science class. Students identify with many of the topics studied as we explore many aspects of Forensic Science. Our school is an urban public school in Oklahoma.

My Project

Leaning the skills of using a microscope, students will investigate their own hair, their pets' hair, and that of classmates. They will be amazed at the differences! We will move on to investigate fabrics, glass, and soil. Students will learn the differences between man-made and natural fibers, index of refraction of glass, and properties of soil. Not only will their science knowledge be increased, but they will certainly become better informed citizens and able to evaluate investigative techniques portrayed on crime scene television shows. Please, help my students get their hands exploring through a couple of Ken-a-Vision Stereomicroscopes.

The interaction of students with laboratory equipment is of upmost importance in creating a quality Forensic Science program.

My underlying goal is to encourage more students across ethnicities and economic groups to continue their studies in scientific fields.
