My Students

Faced with the "Many Faces of Climate Change" as they come to the closing chapters of their investigations on the earth's changing climate, my students need the maximum help possible. Materials needed to investigate plant seasons include a digital camera, computer with Internet access and a printer.

My students are mostly inner city students in the largest city in Illinois.

Most of them are students aspiring to get, not only a high school diploma, but also get admission into one of the city colleges. Some of them hope to pursue higher degrees in the sciences and medicine. They are in the city public education system where sometimes the equipment needed for them to function at optimum levels is not available. This is especially the case in the sciences where hands-on investigations, activities and experiments add motivation, fun and excitement to learning. Science is indeed discovery! The students discover! They are a good example of a diverse group of students - both male and female coming from diverse backgrounds of ethnic and cultural differences. They struggle on, seeking and determined to overcome taunting obstacles in their personal lives as they pursue a higher education and consequently better lives.

My Project

The arrival of a digital camera, computer and printer into my science classroom will indeed give a victorious end and a laudable conclusion to my students' investigations on climate change. Bearing in mind that theirs will be the generation to deal with the realities of global warming or climate change as it is called in more sophisticated terms, my students are passionate about their studies and investigations on climate change. In addition to the many activities that they have carried out and many more to come in their climate change curriculum, their student research project is also on the effects of climate change and the search for alternative energies. Their student research involves a lot of Internet research into the latest research on bio fuels, fuel cells, solar energy, hydro and geothermal energies. Most of the students do not have Internet access in their homes. The more laptops we can get for for them in my classroom, the faster they can do their student projects and investigations.

The main materials needed for the investigation of the "Seasons of a Plant" are computers with Internet access, digital cameras, measuring tools and hand lenses.

The two items beyond our reach financially are the computers and cameras. The "Many Faces of Climate Change" which will conclude our fascinating studies, will include building an Internet database of the phases of change that occur in the plants chosen as their study species. They will use the digital camera to take pictures of the stages for documentation and print those pictures with the printer. Thank you for your support!
