This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I plan to use your donation to read one of my favorite series books of all time, Harry Potter, with my whole class. A majority of my students have not found a passion in reading yet and only do it because it is required. Also, many of them are English Language Learners and need to build their vocabulary and writing skills and I know we can do this through reading books that they find extremely engaging and imaginative. Harry Potter is a seven-book series that gets longer and longer as each new book is read and it becomes more and more complex later in the stories as well. I want them to fall in love with reading. I want them to feel how it is to want to read the next paragraph, the next chapter and the next book because they just can't put it down. If I can get them to fall in love with reading, I might be able to build a lifelong love of reading. Right now, my students wander around the library aimlessly. I try to engage them in books but they are uninterested because they haven't found the genre that sparks their interest. We have read two books so far this year, as of August 1st, and they liked them both (Hatchet by Gary Poulsen and Witches by Roald Dahl), and they look forward to reading, but the larger books intimidate them. They don't feel they can read a book this big.

With your generous donation of a class set of Harry Potter books, I can inspire my sixth grade students to read, and in turn, they will develop an imagination of their own, a stronger vocabulary and a more descriptive way of writing.
