Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 4th graders are an energetic and enthusiastic group of students, many of whom are trying to find balance in their lives. Childhood trauma has affected so many of them that we spend a great deal of time working on Social and Emotional Learning. They are enthusiastic about this and anticipate our class "meetings" with great expectations for finding resolution in their personal lives, and have told me so.
Some of our best discussions have grown out of books read aloud in class that dive into deeper explorations of relationships and problem-solving.
To that end, I have developed a unit focusing on mysteries. Mysteries and the activities that I have designed to surround them encourage problem-solving skills, awareness, and development of creative solutions.
My Project
Fourth graders are naturally inquisitive with quick minds that are always searching for answers. I have developed a mystery unit that capitalizes on this by combining reading, logic lessons, writing, and problem solving to engage students and help them learn and develop the ability to find solutions to problems both large and small.
Mystery book clubs and escape room kits offer the perfect format for students to work in groups to develop logic and inspiration to solve problems together.
Along with these resources, memory games and age appropriate online forensic investigations help students use their creative energy to interpret information and find answers.
Of course, all of these wonderful tools need a place to be displayed and stored. The book sets and other materials will have a home with two sturdy mobile book carts.
