A key piece of our spring science unit focuses on animal life cycles and food chains. Following the development of duck eggs in a classroom incubator and caring for newborn ducklings promotes this learning and leads to an interest in science. It also furthers the students' understanding of our world and their place in it. Students watch the eggs through the entire incubation cycle, examining stages of development and growing excited about this miraculous event. The duckling represent another aspect of that learning in that the care of these small, defenseless creatures promotes nurturing and gentleness. Not only will this project promote an interest in science, but it will help these students to develop empathy and care for others.
