Help me give my students tools like drills and painting supplies necessary for a complete technical theater experience. These items will allow them to build and paint sets and props and learn how to use them.

My Project

Although many people think acting is all that students learn about in a theater class, there is much more to learn. Our standards cover many creative and production-related standards which allow students to do the work to imagine, design, and create the magic of theater. Students can not only design the sets and properties for a play, but they can also build those sets and props and paint them, too. Even middle school students are capable of learning how to build a flat (a piece of stage scenery) and learning the life-skill of how to use a power drill to attach pieces of word together with screws. By learning to use drill bits, power drills, screws, measuring tapes etc. students are practicing skills they can use for the rest of their lives.

Middle school students are eager for the types of hands-on learning we do in technical theater lessons and crave the independence they feel when they learn skills like using power drills and painting; they can't wait for the opportunity to demonstrate they can do these things by themselves!

They build their confidence in themselves by participating in productions and working in the various crews - like stage crew. Proper techniques and procedures for the use and cleaning of paint brushes and other painting supplies are also skills that all students, not just theater students, need.

One of the wonderful things about a theater program is the many ways that students can shine! Some kids are born for the spotlight while others find that their comfort, interests, and skills lie in more behind-the-scenes work in technical theater. I want to expose my students to all areas of theater and allow them to grow and experiment with their interests and talents. There is something for everyone to do in theater!
