We need new "Frisbee's", or flying discs to replace the broken ones at school. I have been doing this lab for a few years and the students enjoy it greatly.
Most of my students come from low-income households with a mixture of background experiences. Our school is in a small-to-medium-size city in a farming area. Most of my students have not experienced the wonder of science and how simple games and toys teach them about scientific principles. They have not been very successful in traditional science classes in the past.
My students have not made the connection between common toys and games and the under laying science the makes them work.
By building on the student's prior knowledge of flying discs, they will develop a better understanding of the science. As they work in groups the students will develop team and cooperative working skills. The group work also reduces the individual student anxiety by share the work with other students. Tasks can be match to individual learn styles and skill sets of the students.
In Their Own Words
We are experimenting with flying discs. We are taping weights on different locations on the disc and observing and recording observation about the flight pattern of the discs. We will be adding the data we gather about flying discs to our larger unit about different types of flight and the science principles of flight.
Each group will be designing the experimental model as the explore with the discs. The rotating of task is important in component of the projects students need to draw the correlation between the way they respond to the group leader and how they want the group to respond when they are the leader. Patience of a leader and patience with leaders are both essential for a successful working group.
Developing positive learning experience for students who have not been successful in the past. My student need opportunities to be successful in school and in life in general. This project takes a simple toy that have experience with into a science project the links their prior experiences with science concept and experimental design.
