Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Just like most young teachers, I am always looking for ways to inspire my students to read. I do have plenty of favorites to recommend and share with my students. This December, one of the great classics of Children's Literature will come to the big screen: C.S. Lewis' “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”. In order to encourage my fifth grade students' love of literature and the use of their imaginations, I will have my students read the novel as a class. Some of the main themes include friendship and courage. I hope to use this book to help build community in my class, as well as to provide them with an enjoyable learning experience. After in-depth discussions, literary essays, and perhaps even some skits, the class will take a trip to watch the movie on the big screen.
Besides the movie, this novel is part of a series, “The Chronicles of Narnia”. Hopefully, this book will inspire my students to read the others in the series (of which I have one copy).
I am asking for 32 copies of the novel "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" so each student I teach will have a copy to read. I am also requesting a copy of the Chronicles of Narnia CD Box Set. These CDs will be used in our classroom listening center, so that students who read on a lower level can also participate and enjoy this worthwhile novel (and the series) with their peers. This is vitally important as over 90% of the students in my school are English Language Learners. Most of my students are reading below grade level, so the chance to hear the words while reading them will be a real benefit.
I am confident that this novel by CS Lewis will be of genuine interest to my fifth graders and will help spark a love of reading. I will also allow other teachers to borrow the class set so that your gift will help many more children.
