The Lion King Backdrop

My students need to design backdrops and masks for our spring play, The Lion King. These art supplies will give us a great start!

My Students

I teach 5th and 6th grade Art. This year our school has decided to preform The Lion King. The music department is practicing the songs and the drama students are rehearsing their lines. The Art Department has offered to help design backdrops and masks for the play.

My students are very talented.

We have started designing paper mache masks for the play. It has amazed me how my students have been able to problem solve during this building process. They have added pieces of cardboard and have even built features of their masks from note cards. We were starting to discuss ways to design backdrops when we realized our supplies may need some updating.

My Project

We have discussed painting smaller backdrops and projecting the best ones on the stage. My students will need to practice with watercolor paper as well as standard paper for the backdrops. We may need to combine types of paint and paper to get finished designs. We discussed painting large canvases for our backdrops, but decided we could create better detail if we worked on a smaller scale.

This project will be a great experience in Theater Design.

Since this is a school wide project most of the students at our school will benefit from the project. We have materials for everyday class projects, but unfortunately our budget will not support additional activities like large backdrops and detailed masks.
