Language is the building block of education. Mastering the art of the written and spoken word will ensure a lifetime of learning.
My students are in a self-contained special education classroom.
With significant cognitive delays and impediments, my students can be challenging but always rewarding. The students range in age from kindergarten to Fifth Grade and follow an adapted core curriculum designed to meet their unique needs.
Most of my students come from high poverty but very loving backgrounds. They absolutely love coming to school and all are very eager to participate and learn as much as possible. I have had the good fortune to watch several of my students grow over the past five years and they are a very important part of my life.
Our inner city elementary school is one of over 120 district schools and we are constantly fighting to overcome the barriers that poverty presents. My students, like all of the others in my school, ask only that someone believe in them. Believe in them we do!
My Project
Learning happens in so many varied ways. With this population, we often need hands-on materials that engage and inspire the learner. The alphabet floor puzzle and alphabet file folder library will help those students who are just beginning to recognize letters and the sounds they make.
Visualization is one of the best ways to teach reading and The Building Language photo library and magnet set will help connect vocabulary to real world experiences. We'll really be able to expand our vocabulary and that is a big step towards reading.
The fiction and nonfiction readers, along with the builder books will really engage and inspire those students who have mastered the alphabet and basic sight word vocabulary. As they move forward with reading, these books will be a huge part of their success.
Watching a child learn to read is one of the biggest rewards in the world of education.
Though my students often take longer to master certain skills, the thrill of watching them succeed is always amazing. These exciting and engaging materials will be a huge boost to both our classroom and my students education.
