The Lifelong Benefits of Reading Begins in Preschool

Help me give my students books that will help them prepare both emotionally and academically for kindergarten.

My Students

Our students come from a once thriving coal-mining community that has been devastated by the loss of income and industry. With over 82% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunches, these children are in great need of a high-quality education. Education and shared resources will be their ticket out of poverty.

Because we are from a high-poverty area, most of my students do not have access to children's literature at home and depend upon their teachers to provide everything they need at school.

This project will help my students to have what they need for preparing for kindergarten.

Our school is located in one of the most beautiful regions of the United States. Our school has struggled with nearly-crippling budget cuts and teacher shortages, and this fact leaves us with difficult choices to make when deciding how to spend money.

My Project

Children who enjoy reading become confident readers and read more often. Reading helps children grow not only academically but also emotionally. Parents, preschool teachers and librarians who read aloud to little ones help them prepare to enter school.

According to the latest research, early exposure to books can be an important component of a child’s development, and will provide a solid foundation for the expansion of reading- Tammy Bennecke (Red Apple Reading Blog).

Preschool children can benefit from being read to, as they gain valuable practice with the many aspects of language and reading, including: language sounds, vocabulary, and practicing basic skills such as sight words, patterns and shapes, colors, numbers and alphabet letters.

The brain quest workbook provides a wonderful selection of both games and exercises to increase learning preparedness. In the book Get Ready for School, Pre-K, early learning concepts like learning & tracing shapes, letters and numbers are covered. Get Ready for Kindergarten contains fill-in-the-blank activities, sight words, shapes and colors. Other resources on this list contain pattern books and award-winning resources that help children make connections between real life and reading.
