My Project

Have you ever read The Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carl and wondered about the life cycle of a butterfly? After reading this story, my second graders started inquiring and wondering about how real caterpillars grow and change from caterpillar to butterfly! Inquiring minds want to know!

With the butterfly kit, my students will have an opportunity to explore the colorful and captivating world of Painted Lady butterflies.

My students will be able to observe the metamorphosis from larva to pupa to adult. My students will be able to make daily observations as the caterpillars eat and eat until they become "faterpillers"! My students will study the features and behaviors of each stage of the life cycle. They will also compare a butterfly to a moth and learn how to distinguish the two insects. The children will also compare the butterfly life cycle to that of other animals. As a culminating activity, we will be taking a field trip to the American Museum of Natural History to see the butterfly conservatory where they can walk in a room fluttering with various species of butterflies and moths.

A butterfly kit consisting of Painted Lady butterfly larvae, host plants, and a butterfly sanctuary will allow my students to be able to study and observe a live organism. This will be a once in a life time experience for my second graders to become lepidopterists!
