My students need an iPad and printer to create a learning center yearbook. They struggle with writing due to different disabilities. This would be motivating for them.
Motivating ANY student to write is a difficult task, let alone a student who has disabilities that affect their academics.
In past years, I have found that my students are left out of the school yearbook so as a class we came up with the idea of creating our own yearbook written and designed by us!
My students are amazing, hardworking, and unfortunately often feel very defeated.
Hands down, writing is the most challenging activity for them. We are working on changing our attitude towards writing and one way to do that is to type and use some of the voice dictation apps on the iPad. In our class we try to focus on our strengths to improve self-esteem and strengthen our weaknesses. They are really excited about creating their very own yearbook filled with pictures of them and their own stories.
My Project
Students will write their stories on the iPad mini. They would use it to take pictures and create yearbook pages. There are so many educational apps that would be helpful in my classroom. We have a student with cerebral palsy who does not have any technology to help her with her writing. We have other students with low muscle tone who have a hard time picking up a pencil and writing. With the iPad you can use dictation apps or typing and teach editing skills. Students with language difficulties can use the iPad to help them work towards their goals as well.
We will use the printer to print out our yearbook.
The iPad mini is a great motivator for students.
Students can participate in meaningful projects without depending on family resources which some families do not have. They are excited at the possibility of having all this technology available to them to help them meet the goals we have set for this year.
