Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Some of my students are individuals with moderate to severe disabilities who are in my culinary class. Their disabilities include autism, Down syndrome, and intellectual disability. We learn vocational skills for jobs in the culinary field, we run a morning bistro with homemade desserts, breakfast sandwiches, hot drinks made by the students. Their ages range from eighteen to twenty-two years.
We are a Title I school where most of the students qualify for the free lunch program.
They are taking my culinary arts strand to give them the job skills they need to find competitive pay or participate in assisted employment programs.
My Project
We have been busy updating the equipment in our cooking lab to replace the worn equipment that we currently use. We use our toaster daily to serve breakfast sandwiches. A new toaster will help us to continue our work safely.
We have been building our bistro for on-campus for the students and staff to enjoy with many thanks to the Donorschoose community.
I have also requested a microwave so that we can have one in our lab. We currently use the microwave in the school's staff room. It will be a great help to have one of our own.
