Help me allow my students to experience the process by which plants grow, are pollinated, and produce fruit in front of their eyes by helping our school-wide STEAM Makerspace with this hydroponic growing system!

My Project

Welcome to Patrick Marsh Middle School in the (sometimes) temperate state of Wisconsin! I am Erin Kauppinen, and my mission this year is simple: facilitate learning in the STEAM disciplines for all of our learners. This is a massive shift for our building and district, both of which have traditionally focused solely on the "advanced learners" for special projects and opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. No more!

My learners are from grades 6-8, and I welcome every student in the school of 600 into my Makerspace for learning via fun, synergy, and community; the hydroponic center that I have requested will allow me to educate and offer fantastic food production and pollination learning activities and opportunities to a school that usually must wait until May for such activities, due to the climate.

I look forward to watching learners use handmade "bees" to pollinate the plants-- to watch the growth of the fruit that they helped create, and to taste it. It will be a journey!

Hopefully, our learners will never look at the all-too-often thrown away lunchroom apples and oranges, and our pollinators, the same way again!
