The Inside Story

My students need 4 different examples of animals: 5 to 10 of each, such as earthworms, fetal pigs, and frogs to give them an opportunity to look at the real inside story of each example of a body system to help them remember and learn structures hands-on in the lab.

Biology/Life Science in our school includes all students grades 6 through 12. We live in a bush community where we do not have road access for 6 months out of the year. This year we experienced a disaster when the ice destroyed our town. The students have not been able to leave and are struggling to rebuild homes, businesses and the community. The school has been the incident command post since May 6, 2009. We hope to restore normal activities in the school and have a great year school. The materials in this proposal will give students an opportunity to observe body systems or the inside story, hands on and remember what they learn. So often students who only look at pictures do not retain the information for future reference and to build their knowledge for careers and jobs.

Bush Alaska does not have road access for 6 months out of the year. Getting materials is expensive and our supply budget is eaten up by postage and shipping. Our students need the opportunity to discover in a lab setting information they will not forget because they saw it up close and personal. From experience students remember what they have seen, touched and recalled from a lab experience instead of just looking at pictures, even animated pictures on the Internet do not substitute for the real thing.

We need 4 different specimens 5 to 10 of each to dissect for the life and biology classes this year. Students need to handle and dissect and to actually observe up close the systems of different organisms. Once learned they will never forget if they have actually dissected a specimen and not just looked at it in a book. I have grades 6-12 therefore a variety of specimens are needed to accommodate different learning levels.

You will make it possible for my students to have experiences in their science class that they will not forget. The information they will be able to learn and retain because of the lab materials you are supplying will make scientists out of my kids. We have a high number of students who leave and major in the sciences because our classes focus on labs and hands on learning. The kids are interested and successful in science. We all know how we need scientists in the U.S.A. Your help will make a huge difference for my class. Thank-you
