Have you ever felt overwhelmed by a page of words? Spent hours trying to decode a word? Felt bored? Drawing no connections to your world?
These are the challenges my students are facing daily. As they getting ready to give up; my last hope is to introduce them to a new, fun, and adventurous book.
First of all, my students are funny, smart and eager to learn and see a new world.
They have been diagnosed with a learning or behavior disabilities, but don't be fooled because they are wise beyond their years.
These students attend a Title I middle school located in a challenging neighborhood. Many of them are second language learners, often from single parent and/or low economic households. Very often, school is the most safe and consistent aspect of their lives.
As an end of a year project, I would like to have a class set of The Hunger Games so each student can read at their own pace, enjoy the pleasure of reading, and just take a book home to share with their families. Students will receive differentiated activities and individual instruction to address their specific needs and interests.
I want my students to get the same opportunities as any other students.
Most often, special education students receive hand-me-down or discarded materials. Rarely are the materials chosen specifically for their needs and interests. A small item such as a new book can go a long way in making those students feeling valued.
