Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I would like to request support for a series of twelve dance lessons for our forty kindergartners. We hope to hire a modern dance/creative movement expert who offers weekly sessions that will last for one hour.
Hiring a professional dancer will add rigor and excitement to our study of dance and the human body. It will enable students to create and reflect upon quality work in dance.
I teach at an urban charter school that serves a high percentage of low-income English Language Learners. Our school uses the Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound model, in which students study one topic in depth for several months. We emphasize learning from experts in the discipline and creating real-world products to demonstrate learning.
Next fall, our kindergartners will undertake a four-month learning expedition about dance. The project will integrate science, social studies, health, physical education, literacy, mathematics, and the arts. Investigations will include: What is dance? Why do people dance? What are similarities and differences between dance styles from different cultures? How do our bodies move? What moves can our bodies make? How can our bodies express ideas and emotions? How do dancers take care of their bodies?
For our culminating project, the kindergartners will choreograph a group dance piece, rehearse it, design costumes and sets, make programs, advertise, sell tickets, and perform.
As I am not a dancer, my ability to teach dance is very limited. Hiring a professional for weekly lessons will give the students much deeper exposure to the life and craft of a dancer. As preparation for choreographing their own piece, the teacher will show the students a variety of ways to express ideas, emotions, and stories through movement.
Working with a professional will transform our lesson plans into a challenging and inspiring learning experience for students.
