Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come to school motivated and enthusiastic to learn. They come from diverse backgrounds and predominately low socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of my students have learning challenges but they do not let that slow their desire to learn.

COVID-19 has presented many challenges for our families and I want to make sure I have the best materials available to support the students in the upcoming school year.

All students have the right to learn and feel successful and empowered at school. It is my job to individualize their learning experiences using research-based approaches that are proven to support struggling readers.

My Project

My project will help me learn the most up-to-date information regarding the science of reading and how I can help struggling readers. Louisa Moat's book "Speech to Print" provides current research in the field of reading and language development. She explains the history of the English language and how to deliver effective reading instruction for all students.

There is a reading crisis in America and many students are not gaining the necessary skills to become successful, proficient readers.

The theory behind the science of reading emphasizes the urgent need for systematic, explicit reading instruction for all students. "Phonics and Spelling Through Phoneme Grapheme Mapping" book provides a sequence of lessons from foundational skills through multi-syllabic words. This book will help me to create lessons around the individual needs of my students. William Van Cleave's book will serve as a guide and resource to create lessons and find answers to questions regarding the English language and the origins of words. All of these resources are designed to improve my background knowledge on the science of reading and allow me to create more effective reading instruction for struggling readers. My goal is for my students to develop the necessary skills to be lifelong learners.
