My students need these books, "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" as we study a unit on the Holocaust in 6th Grade. "I Survived Gettysburg" would be for a unit we complete in 5th Grade.

My Students

Some good examples of my students are that they are a part of a financially impoverished community where little opportunity is held for their parents.

Most days their basic needs are met here at school as it is the best part of their day.

They are a very interesting dynamic when all together that characterizes kindness, caring, and compassion for each other. They may not have material possessions like some kids do, but they are very grateful for everything we do for them here at school.

My Project

We work through these units as a class activity where my students are in Literature Circle groups. They will read and complete activities both in small groups and whole class in order to gain a greater understanding of the material being covered in class.

These books, being realistic fiction, give them a sense of what it was like to be alive during that particular time in history.

They have completed a couple of Literature Circles this year with books I had purchased, and showed so much enthusiasm that I had to find a way to try to bring more of this type of instruction into my classroom.
